With the availability of the online DOC inmate search platform, searching for information about an inmate in Indiana is no longer a hectic task. The information is readily available as the State’s County Sheriff’s Association sees that the database is always updated whenever new information is gathered. The platform allows the public to access inmate information anytime; you will need proper search devices to access the internet, for instance, a good phone, desktop, or laptop. A steady internet connection is also vital.

Inmate Search on the DOC Website
- Access the internet and look for the Indiana Department of Correction website and access the inmate search page.
- You will be required to provide specific inmate details to help in the search process on the search page. You will need the inmate’s last or first name, or you will need their DOC number.
- DOC number will end your search journey way too fast, and you wouldn’t have to go through several inmates to identify one inmate. This is because all inmates in Indiana have a unique DOC number; therefore, as long as you give an accurate number, you are guaranteed accurate results.
- Do not worry if you do not have the inmate’s DOC number; you can always go for the second search option, which is to search by the inmate’s last or first name.
- Inmates with similar names will be displayed for your view, and identify the one you want. Scroll through carefully so you do not obtain information on the wrong inmate.
- Once you come across the inmate whose data you want, click on their DOC number, and more data about their incarceration and physical appearance will be displayed for you.
Using Indiana Statewide Automated Victim Information & Notification
Secondly, you may search for an inmate using Indiana Statewide Automated Victim Information & Notification. The service will ensure you constantly get helpful information about inmates via notifications.
Victims use the platform to gain public and hidden data about an inmate; for instance, a victim can gain access to an inmate’s release date. The date may not be public information, but through the Automated Victim Information & Notification, a victim can it.
Suppose searching for information on an inmate using the above two methods is not successful; ensure to call the IDOC at (317) 233-6984. Alternatively, visit the correctional facility where the inmate is being held.
Indiana Sex Offender Search
By the beginning of each year, the Indiana sheriff’s department is obliged by Zachary’s Law to develop a clear, updated Sex and Violent Offender Registry. The registry should be able to describe details about a sex offender that is currently schooling, working, or living within the State.
As of July 1, 2006, IDOC took over the development of the Sex and Violent Offender Registry from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute . To successfully search for a sex offender in Indiana, consider the following,
- Access the Indiana Sex Offender Locator Tool
- Search for the offender by name, area, and committed crime.
Indiana Jails Roster
The Indiana inmate roster contains all of an inmate’s necessary incarceration information. In this case, the inmate must be incarcerated in any correctional facility within Indiana. The information in Indiana inmate roster includes the inmate’s name, age, race, gender, sentencing data, previous criminal charges, transfer details, and possible release date.
You may also gather additional criminal data about an inmate, like audio recordings, DNA information, mugshot, fingerprints, and video clips. The Indiana jail roster is considered public information by Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act.
Through the help of the Indiana Department of Correction organization, the Indiana inmate roster records are gathered from the moment a suspect is arrested, booked, taken through the court system, sentenced, served time, and on parole until they are released back into the community.
The organization has also made it easy for the public to access the Indiana inmate roster via online platforms, as discussed above. You may also visit the correctional facility if the information you need is not accessed via the provided guidelines.
Apart from The Indiana Department of Correction online platform, other third-party organizations also gather and share Indiana inmate rosters. The government does not sponsor third-party organizations to run privately; however, they are reliable because they are not geographically restricted. The data on these third-party websites may differ from one site to another depending on how often they update inmate data.

Indiana Detention Centers
All correctional facilities within Indiana are run by the Indiana Department of Correction, whose headquarters is at 302W Washington St, Suite 333, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204, in the U.S. The department has taken credit for employing over 6,400 Hoosiers and caring for over 25,000 adults and 450 minors in Indiana correctional facilities.
Under the IDOC, there are three juvenile detention centers and 18 prisons; two hold female inmates, while the rest hold men. Furthermore, the department also oversees ten districts for parole.
Other detention facilities in Indiana include a reception/diagnostic facility, a re-entry center, and 15 work release facilities. The work release facilities enable low-risk inmates to work out of prison in preparation for their release date.
The Indiana detention system also comprises roughly two dozen county jails holding inmates serving short-term sentences, those awaiting sentencing, bond, and bail, and those awaiting transportation to state prison. The Indiana county jails are run by the county Sheriff’s offices or local police.
How to Contact an Inmate in Indiana
You can contact an inmate in Indiana correctional facility via a phone call, mail, or visit them.
Calling an Inmate
The Indiana DOC Inmate Telephone Service, alongside GTL, have made it easy for people to communicate with their loved ones despite being locked up. All that is required is an inmate telephone account that must be created and credited. Several payment solutions will ensure the inmate’s telephone account is credited.
Secondly, the inmate should develop a list of not more than 20 names and their phone numbers to the correctional facility’s department. You will receive a call from your loved one in Indiana correctional facility through a collect call, prepaid collect call, or inmate debit calls
- Collect call –Telephone numbers that the Indiana correctional facility has approved can receive collect calls from the inmate. However, there are restrictions regarding collect calls heading to cell phones, hospitals, and office numbers. Charges for collect calls are billed to the number being called.
- Prepaid collect call- You may opt for prepaid collect calls to avoid certain restrictions attached to collect calls and local phone companies. To sign up for the prepaid collect call option, call GTL at 800-483-8314. They will set up a calling account to your phone number, allowing you to receive inmate phone calls without restrictions
- Inmate debit calls- With an inmate debit call option, inmates can purchase phone debit minutes from the commissary, enabling them to make phone calls to family and friends as long the correctional facility has approved their numbers. By creating an Offender Phone account, anybody can buy the minutes as long as they have the inmate’s PIN Debit account.
Sending a Mail to an Inmate in Indiana
The second method of contacting an inmate in Indiana is by sending a mail to them. However, the exchange of mail between inmates is highly restricted except on special occasions when the head of the facility permits it.
All mail must be opened, inspected, and read to ensure no illegal substances are being sent into the correctional facilities. Mails from legal correspondence are inspected before the inmate but not read. Furthermore, the letters should not contain staples, stickers, lipstick, symbols, maps, or any other form of diagram or decoration.
Suppose you want to send a picture in the mail; ensure the image is 4 “x6” in size. The picture should also not contain details of a sexual nature, for instance, nudity, and should also not display any form of illegal activity.
To send a mail, follow the procedure below:
The full name of the inmate
The inmate’s ID number
Location of the correctional facility
Name of the facility
P.O.BOX
City, State, zip code
Mailing Reading Materials to an Inmate in Indiana
Most correctional facilities accept reading materials mailed to inmates as long as they follow certain requirements, as illustrated below:
- They should not come from a third party but directly from the publisher. Therefore you can order books online and mail them directly to the inmate without going through a third-party seller.
- The books should be new and unused; used books will automatically be rejected.
If you are purchasing a book, magazine or newspaper online from a well-established seller like amazon, select ship by USPS, and provide the physical address of the correctional facility, the first and last name of the inmate and their ID number.
Also, ensure the contents of the reading material do not include sexual or criminal activities, or else the institution will not accept them.
Visiting an inmate in Indiana
Thirdly, visiting an inmate is another alternative way of contacting an inmate. Visitation plays an essential role in the rehabilitation of an inmate, especially if they are visited by family and friends who serve as their mentors and role models.
As much as visiting an inmate is seen as a great way to keep in contact with the inmate, there are certain expectations that you, as a family member or friend, are expected to meet to see your loved one. For instance:
- Request a visiting application form from the inmate. According to the Indiana Department of Corrections, the form should be mailed to you from the inmate.
- Fill out the visitation form and mail it back to the correctional facility.
- Wait for the visitation to be approved, which may take a few weeks.
- Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by adults whose visitation requests have also been approved. They must have an ‘Authorization for a minor child to visit’ form and a copy of their birth certificate attached to it.
- The inmate will be responsible for communicating to you whether the request has been approved or denied.
- Each Indiana correctional facility has its visiting hours and dates. If you are unsure of this information, call the correctional facility to confirm.
- Approved visitors cannot bring things like electronics, lighters, tobacco products, music devices, cell phones, cameras, drugs, alcohol, or weapons. Such devices may result in the prosecution of the visitor.
- When visiting, you must provide a valid ID, passport, or military ID.
- Visitors can only bring in up to $20 in quarters if they need to purchase anything from the visitation area vending machine. You are not allowed to give money to an inmate.
- Visitors must be subjected to a search including automobiles.
As for the attorney, government, or law enforcement official, some of the above requirements will not interfere with your visitation. For instance, you will not be time bound, some of the visiting regulations will not apply to you, and all you will need is approval from the head of the correctional facility.
Sending Money to an Inmate in Indiana
Inmates in Indiana correctional facilities can receive money from friends and family members; however, the money has to be sent as a United States Postal money order. The order must be made payable via ‘JPAY.’ Fill out the inmate deposit form by providing their name and ID number. Finally, send the money order and the deposit form addressed to the following details
